Reciprocal Reading

Reciprocal reading is a structured method of guided reading where students are taught to take on roles to explore and find meaning in texts. It emphasises teamwork and supports independent comprehension skills.

Reciprocal reading has been shown to increase both reading and listening comprehension and has demonstrated that students transfer the learning into other contexts.

The Predictor: makes predictions about the text based on information. What do you think will happen? What other possible outcomes are there? What clues does the title give you?

The Clarifier: identifies the confusing words, sentences and ideas. What does this word mean? Have we heard it before? How can we find out?

The Summariser: helps to identify the most important ideas in the text and what it is about. What can we learn from this passage? How does this section of text add to our understanding?

The Questioner: asks questions about the text – Blooms Taxonomy for higher order thinking. Who? What? Where? When? How?
